Warning signs women should not ignore

D.r Samane Saghafian Larijani a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology at Firouzabadi Hospital highlighted several symptoms that require medical assessment."The female reproductive system undergoes various physiological changes at different stages of life. However, some symptoms require careful clinical assessment. These include abnormal bleeding very heavy or prolonged menstrual periods. any bleeding or spotting after the menopause chronic or acute pelvic pain significant irregularities in menstrual cycles unusual vaginal discharge accompanied by burning itching or an unpleasant odour pain during intercourse, menopausal problems and difficulties with fertility."
D.r Saghafian Larijani stressed that these symptoms do not necessarily indicate a serious illness but said that identifying their underlying cause at an early stage is important."However, if very heavy bleeding is accompanied by weakness, paleness low blood pressure or dizziness or if sudden severe pelvic pain occurs particularly when pregnancy is possible immediate assessment in an emergency department is essential. In these situations medical attention should not be delayed."

Regular check-ups can help identify problems before symptoms appear

D.r Saghafian Larijani emphasised that visits to a gynaecologist should not be limited to times when symptoms develop."Routine appointments provide an opportunity to review personal and family medical history receive advice on reproductive health assess lifestyle factors and establish a screening plan suited to each woman's age and circumstances."Cervical cancer screening, including Pap tests and molecular tests for human papillomavirus (HPV) can help identify changes that may require further investigation. When carried out in accordance with appropriate clinical guidelines screening can detect precancerous changes before they progress allowing timely follow up and management.
D.r Saghafian Larijani also addressed concerns that may discourage women from attending appointments particularly the fear that every visit will involve an internal examination or a series of diagnostic tests."Visiting a gynaecology clinic does not necessarily mean that an internal examination ultrasound scan or complex tests will be performed straight away. The need for these procedures depends on the individual's clinical circumstances and age. Women should not allow assumptions or fear about the examination process to prevent them from attending routine health checks."

Overcoming fear and embarrassment about seeking care

Emotional and psychological barriers can also prevent women from seeking timely medical advice. Sepide KhasseTarash, MSc, a health psychology specialist at Firouzabadi Hospital explained why awareness alone may not be enough to encourage women to attend appointments."Scientific awareness alone does not lead to clinical action. Unfortunately factors such as fear of being diagnosed with an illness anxiety about pain during an examination cultural embarrassment or even an unpleasant experience in the past can cause women to avoid or postpone seeking medical care."
She highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment in which women feel comfortable discussing their concerns and making decisions about their care."Patients should know that examinations and treatment are based on informed consent and respect for their dignity. Every patient has the right to ask for an explanation of the examination process before any procedure takes place, raise any concerns and manage the process if they feel uncomfortable. Health psychology works alongside clinical teams to challenge misconceptions reduce anxiety and build confidence helping women take a more active role in their own healthcare."

KhasseTarash also advised women to prepare for their appointments in advance."To make the most of a consultation, women should write down the date of their last menstrual period details of their symptoms previous test results medication history and the main questions they wish to ask. This can help ensure a clearer discussion and support better informed clinical decisions."
